Most school boards in Ontario have programs for adults who want to earn a High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate.
A high school diploma is important because it can help you get a job or admission to an educational or training program. If you wish to earn a high school diploma as an adult, you can take classes at your local school board, study in the evenings, study from home, or take an equivalency test (GED).
Just by searching on the internet there there are various services and centre willing to teach adults. These organizations/school-boards have centres when you can attended classes in person like the TDSB (Toronto District School Board). However, if you can’t attend in person there are also usually options for remote learning. In addition, if you are working schools also offer night classes or morning classes, giving you options no matter what your job is.
The biggest remote learning centre is the TVO ILC, the same government backed organization that holds the GED test and hands out the GED certificate. The TVO ILC acts like a regular high school offering all sorts of courses and guidance for it’s students. Unlike other organizations TVO ILC doesn’t have mandatory class attendance and you only pay for the courses your attend. According to the TVO ILC, students can “take up to 10 months to complete each course of 110 hours of instruction plus tests and assignments”. Giving students 10 months to complete a course lets students approach learning at their own pace and fit in learning anytime during their busy personal lives.
Unfortunately, no matter how much you learn, you have to take the GED test to get your GED certificate or the High School Equivalency Certificate.
