What is Occupation-specific Language Training (OSLT)?

OSLT is a language program delivered by Ontario colleges. OSLT is aimed at helping you develop better communication skills for the Canadian workplace at no cost to you if you are a newcomer too Canada. To qualify for OSLT participates must be permanent residents or convention refugees/protected persons.

As of September 21 2022, Ukrainian temporary residents or their dependents in Canada who have training or experience in a specific occupation or industry, but need to improve their occupation-specific communication skills OR a valid language proficiency of at least level 5 in Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) or it’s French equivalent the NCLC. Some courses/modules require higher CLB levels for example “skilled trades” requires a CLB/NCLC level of 4 . This information may change depending on the situation in Ukraine.

OSLT can help you improve your occupation-specific language skills. It also teaches you about Canadian social and cultural expectations in different industries. These free courses can help you communicate clearly and effectively with clients, colleagues and supervisors; understand Canadian workplace culture in specific occupations or sectors; connect with employers through job fairs, networking events and employer partnerships; give and receive information by email and telephone; and how to interview effectively.

There are two ways to learn with OSLT. They have classroom based classes and online module. Classroom based can be in person or virtual. It is also offered in full time or part time if you have other obligations like working a job. However if you have no time whatsoever they have their online module option. According to their website, “Each module is 40 hours (six weeks), and three online modules in one sector are equivalent to a full classroom-based OSLT course”.
